WVU Alcohol Policies
West Virginia University Fraternity Party Policy
Fraternities are permitted three house parties per semester contingent upon their performance in the eight areas listed below, which are evaluated periodically. These eight areas are:
- Academics
- Financial Management (Monitored by Housing Corporation)
- University/Community Relations & Services
- Campus Involvement (Such as “Take Back the Night”)
- Membership Recruitment and Pledge Program (Reviewed from 2001-2002 and no incidents occurred involving few members)
- Proactive in Reducing the Number of Non-Acceptable Incidents Occurring Away from the Fraternity Houses
- In-house Educational Programs Regarding Alcohol/Substance Abuse and Sexual Assault Prevention (Documented by Educators)
- Involvement by Individual Members of Fraternities in Campus Drug/Alcohol Prevention Efforts of the School of Medicine and University Health Services. (This involvement will be coordinated between fraternity system advisor and the Advisory Council on Alcohol and Other Drugs)
Upon completion of the following requirements, Fraternities will also be allowed to hold one alumni function, one parent function, and one formal function. These requirements are:
- A Fraternity must have documented proof that an alcohol education session was held the previous semester
- A Fraternity must have an average Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 2.75 or have risen their average GPA by .2 points from the previous semester. The GPA will reflect the average of the previous semester.
- All new members must take Orientation/University 101.
The Fraternity Functions (alumni, parent, and formal, respectively) must follow the criteria listed below:
- The alumni function will be centered around and opened to the alumni of the respected chapter. The percentage of alumni in attendance will be at least 40% of the chapter size.
- The parent function will be centered around and opened to the parents of the members of the respected chapter. The percentage of parents in attendance will be at least 30% of the chapter size.
- The formal function will only be opened to members of the respected chapter and one date per brother. A detailed explanation of this event will be provided to Advisor Ron Justice prior to the event for approval. Alumni advisors must sign off on this as well.
Any violation of the Alcohol Policy would result in the loss of all social events with alcohol on the Chapter property. Any pending disciplinary action would negate all social activities by the Chapter.
