Arabian Adventure

The Office of Student Affairs and the Office of International Programs are sponsoring this exciting new Spring Break Study Abroad Program!

Students will enroll in the Introduction to the Middle East course during the Spring 2010 semester, and then travel to the region over the Spring Break holiday.

Taught by professors from the political science and religious studies departments, the course examines modern middle eastern countries from a political and religious perspective. From March 26th, 2010 to April 4th, 2010, students and faculty will take a specially designed trip through Jordan, The United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The trip will display the diversity and vibrancy of these Middle Eastern countries while focusing on the issues discussed in class. Students will earn a total of 4 credit hours through this program, 3 hours for the course and 1 hour for the Spring Break trip.

Jordan

The journey begins in Jordan, an ancient land that continues to be a powerful religious and political country.

Beginning in Amman, Jordan IMG_2407 students will visit the Roman Amphitheater and experience the modern Jordanian life. Next, get a feel for the past as you travel through the Jordanian countryside and visit crusader castles, Mt. Nebo, and spend the evening in a traditional Bedouin tent. A full day will be devoted to the mystery and wonder of Petra, one of the seven wonders of the world. Before leaving Jordan, be sure to float in the waters of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth.

The United Arab Emirates

BURJ-AL-ARAB The adventure continues as students travel to the United Arab Emirates to experience the opulence of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

A stark contrast from Jordan, these cities boast magnificent modern structures, including the 3rd largest mosque in the world, the tallest building in the world, and the world’s only 7 star hotel. mosque in abu dhabi While in the U.A.E. the group will embark on a desert excursion for an Arabian evening of food, henna, camel rides, and belly-dancing under the stars. And of course, time will be devoted to shopping, both in traditional souks and magnificent malls.

Oman

nizwa The final destination is the Sultanate of Oman, where another culture can be experiences through their distinct traditions.

While here, wander the streets of Nizwa, the ancient capital city of Oman from the 6th and 7th century. Later on, visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Sultan’s palace, and stroll the Corniche at night. Be sure to pick up some frankincense at the local souk and gaze upon the ancient forts sprinkled all throughout the countryside.

Cost

The cost for the trip is $2,500. This price includes:
– International airfare
– Accommodation
– Most activities and meals
